Freedom of expression of cartoonists and journalists: protection and limitations of the right in Greek and Cypriot law
Author(s): Scientific Editors: Spyridon-Heracles Aktypis, Philippe Jougleux, Tatiana-Eleni Synodinou
A year after the terrorist attack on the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, the Marangopoulos Foundation for Human Rights (MFHR) published a collective volume on the topical issue of freedom of expression of journalists and cartoonists. The volume includes ten studies that highlight the current challenges of the protection of freedom of expression at a time when it is threatened and challenged not only by all kinds of fanaticism, intolerance, and religious fundamentalism, but also by governments’ anti-terrorism measures.
This volume examines the various aspects of the legal regime for the protection of the right to freedom of expression and its limitations, both under Greek and Cypriot law, and in the light of the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights. Special emphasis is placed on the thorny, yet always topical issue of the relationship between freedom of expression and freedom of religion and belief. French Professor of International Law Emmanuel Decaux, President of the UN Committee on Enforced Disappearances prefaces this volume.
