Press Releases,

The webinar “Conflits de normes : Quelle réponse de la Cour européenne des droits de l’homme face aux divergences contemporaines?”, co-organised by the Marangopoulos Foundation for Human Rights and the René Cassin Foundation – International Institute of Human Rights, took place yesterday, Wednesday, 30 September 2026, with great success.

The discussion, moderated by Professor Linos-Alexandre Sicilianos, President of the Marangopoulos Foundation for Human Rights, brought together Professor Sébastien Touzé, Director of the René Cassin Foundation, Mr Mustapha Afroukh, Senior Lecturer at the University of Montpellier, and Ms Evangelia Vasalou, Doctor of Law and Project Officer at the Council of Europe’s Division for cooperation on Freedom of Expression.

The discussion focused on how the European Court of Human Rights addresses conflicts between norms, obligations and protected rights, as well as the different methods it employs to reconcile them. The speakers examined, in particular, the evolution of the Court’s case-law in response to challenges arising from armed conflicts and international humanitarian law, migration, technological developments and climate change. The discussion also provided an opportunity to reflect on the limits of harmonious interpretation and on how the Court approaches divergences between different legal orders.

MFHR warmly thanks the speakers and the co-organizers for their participation and valuable contribution to a lively and substantive academic discussion.
