On Wednesday, 28 October 2026, The Hague Academy of International Law held its annual side event at United Nations Headquarters in New York on the topic “The Resilience of the Peaceful Settlement of International Disputes Mechanisms”, chaired by Professor Linos-Alexandre Sicilianos, President of the Marangopoulos Foundation for Human Rights (MFHR).

The event was attended by H.E. Mr. Marcin Czepelak, Secretary-General of the Permanent Court of Arbitration; Professor Laurence Boisson de Chazournes, Professor at the University of Geneva and Member of the Curatorium of the Academy; and Professor Patrícia Galvão Teles, Member of the International Law Commission, Director-General for European and International Law at the Portuguese MFA, Professor at the Autonomous University of Lisbon and Member of the Curatorium of the Academy.

In his remarks, Professor Linos-Alexandre Sicilianos, MFHR President, emphasized, in particular, the significance of the cases pending before the International Court of Justice that raise fundamental issues concerning the protection of human rights and the prohibition of genocide. He noted that this development reflects a deeper transformation in the role and character of the Court itself, as well as the increasingly close integration of human rights into the very fabric of general international law. The protection of these rights is no longer the exclusive preserve of specialized judicial and quasi-judicial bodies; rather, it is now also at the heart of the work of the principal judicial organ of the United Nations.
